At the upcoming Town Council meeting on Monday evening, Jackson Mayor Hailey Morton-Levinson will officially proclaim October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This recognition highlights the serious issue of domestic violence, which affects individuals across all communities and demographics. The proclamation emphasizes the right of every person to live free from violence in their homes and communities.
Domestic violence is not limited to any one group and can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, an estimated 10 million people are victims of domestic violence each year, though many of these crimes go unreported. In Wyoming alone, a single day in 2023 saw 178 victims of domestic violence receiving help through shelters, support services, and counseling.
Mayor Morton-Levinson’s proclamation also highlights the efforts of local organizations such as Teton County Victim Services, the Community Safety Network, and other state and local agencies working to provide assistance to victims. The proclamation calls on individuals and community leaders to take a personal pledge to help end domestic violence by not committing, condoning, or remaining silent about violence.
The mayor encourages all members of the community to play a role in creating a safer environment for everyone.
