Jackson Town Council yesterday addressed growing concerns about the incursion of bears into the city proper in recent years. Among the three options proposed are two that would require garbage containers outside homes to be wildlife-proof – either funded by the homeowners themselves or by the trash franchises.
Such a requirement would be mandated by municipal code. The third option would depend on residents’ voluntary efforts to make their trash and properties less attractive to bears and other wildlife. Council agreed with the alternatives, but ultimately decided to wait and coordinate their action with the county’s as the board of commissioners also determines what action to take on the matter.
