With just one more tournament remaining this season before state, the Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team posted a 2nd place finish at the Rock Springs Invitational Tournament last weekend. Jackson earned 52 points while Cheyenne East took first place with 73.
Seniors and team captains Josh Hansen and Preston Harmon led the top finishes with their 1st place finish in Public Forum Debate. Harmon went on to place 3rd in Extemporaneous Speaking while Hansen finished 2nd in Congressional Debate.
Junior Will Aepli topped the podium in Congressional Debate, and teamed up with fellow junior Lily Briggs in Public Forum Debate where the pair took home 3rd. Briggs continued her strong weekend with a 4th place finish in Congressional Debate and 6th in Program Oral Interpretation.
Sophomore Blanca Sartillo Mejia also found success in Program Oral Interpretation where she placed 4th. She teamed up with fellow sophomore Julieta Anaya Aguilar in Duet Interpretation where the duo reached the semifinal round. Anaya Aguilar went on to the semifinals in both Poetry Interpretation and Humorous Interpretation as well.
Sophomore Bohdan Barnett placed 6th in Informative Speaking. He teamed up with junior Carter Worcester in Duet Interpretation where they reached the semifinals. They were joined in the semifinals by sophomores Sophie Lamb and Maya Worcester. Carter Worcester and Lamb also reached the final round of Congressional Debate where they placed 10th and 13th, respectively.
Sophomore Alexis Hernandz earned 5th in Extemporaneous Speaking. Junior Sarah Schweitzer reached the semifinals of the event as well.
“Only one more tournament remains before the state tournament,” co-coach Peggy Gagnon said. “With the team’s performances this weekend the students have shown they are gearing up for the very competitive culminating tournaments. We are excited to meet the challenges the next few weeks will provide.”
Jackson competes this coming weekend at the Worland Invitational held by Worland High School.
