With several weeks of cold temperatures behind us now, area residents me be thinking about cleaning the accumulated ashes out of their wood stoves or fireplaces. Disposal of those ashes, says Fire Marshal Kathy Clay, can be problematic if they are not handled properly. Clay advises that when you do dispose of ashes, put them into a metal can, take them outside and put some water on them. It is also advised not to place the container with discarded ashes onto a wooden deck or other surface that could over time ignite. Clay says do not think that there isn’t ignition potential because there is – those embers hold heat for a very long time.
