Ladies are 2 for Tuesdays

An emotional win lifted the spirits of the Lady Broncs (2-15) Tuesday afternoon as they notched just their second victory this season over the visiting Riverton Lady Wolverines (2-13). Jackson’s only other win this season also came on a Tuesday (January 5) when they beat Big Piney.
The girls got off to a sluggish start with injured point guard Jacie Chatham cheering on her mates from the broadcasting booth as she joined KZ95 as color analyst on the live radio and video stream.
Riverton’s Chaylee Campbell was all Jackson could handle for the first half of the contest. Campbell rained down three triple’s enroute to her team-high 20 points. But the Wolverines didn’t have Karsen Breeding.
Jackson’s 6-foot freshman steadied the Jackson girls with her game-high 21, including 9 from the free throw line where she made steady appearances earned by her tough work down low. Speaking of post pounding, sophomore Gracie Hardeman took some and gave some in the paint as she notched 13—her best offensive output of the season.
Joanna Smits, normally the team’s best ball disher with surgical precision, decided to shoot more Tuesday and the result was refreshing. Smits banked a personal best 12 points, including two from distance that brought the gym to life and her benchmates to their feet.
Audrey Fouras added 9—all treys—and the emerging Brooklyn Hills converted 3 clutch free throws to seal the 62-53 win.
Boys busted by Lucas
Had the Wolverines not brought power forward Jared Lucas to Jackson, the Broncs would have won the makeup game played Tuesday. But, alas, Lucas made the trip and blew sky high any hopes the Broncs had of besting Riverton.
Lucas simply went off on the Broncs. Normally averaging 13 points a game, the 6’5” senior doubled that with 30—distributed methodically at 15 points each half.
Jackson had no answer for the size of Riverton, who improved their record to 10-7 on the season. Lucas is joined down low by the 6’6” junior Lucas Engle. The twin towers were difficult to contain for Broncs’ bigs Andrew Hanna and Gavin Keelin. And, even when you are able to neutralize their inside game, perimeter bombers like Damon Devries (6 pts) and Aquilo Friday (11 pts) can make it rain.
Still, Jackson hung around, nearly trading basket for basket with the Wolverines. And the contributions came from everywhere. The Brunner brothers—Gavin and Seb—had 11 point apiece starting together for the first time this season. Gavin Keelin added 8, Rowan Bruno 5, Andrew Hanna 4, Hayden Cross 4, and Sam Lopeman 2.
The 64-45 loss puts the Broncs record at 1-16 for the season.
The final game of the regular season is this Saturday, February 27. It is senior night for Jackson. Girls tap at 2:00pm, boys start at 3:30pm.
