Yesterday’s meeting of Wyoming’s special legislative session to consider the state taking counter measures against a federal mandate for COVID vaccinations saw some rather heated debate in the Senate.
State Senator Mike Gierau from Teton County says an amendment that was offered but voted down would put the state’s businesses in the middle of the fight between the state and the Federal Government.
‘We’re putting a federal mandate on that side of the room – we’re on this side of the room – we’re drawing our guns, and every business owner in the state is in the middle. Forget about economic development. Forget about making the state a better state. Forget about diversification. We’re taking steps backwards!’
State Senator Cheri Steinmetz says the session is a defining moment for the state.
‘Are we going to draw a line in the sand or not? Are we actually going to stand up and do something or not? Are we all going to stand on the same side – the state of Wyoming employers and employees – and demand state sovereignty and that they respect our rights? This is a defining moment for our citizens and for the state of Wyoming.’
The bill that would prohibit some employers from requiring their workers to get the coronavirus vaccination to keep their jobs died in the Senate, leaving only one of the 20 bills originally filed still alive for passage in the Legislature’s special session
