House Bill 66 that would have established a state-wide lodging tax was soundly defeated on third reading this week in the Wyoming Senate. The bill sought a 5% tax on lodging with 3% of that designated to run the state Travel and Tourism Department. But some feared that too many state residents would end up paying much of the tax, and it was defeated with a vote of 7 in favor and 19 against the measure. Teton County Senator Mike Gierau says the defeat was most unfortunate considering the advantages the tax could have brought to the state.
The bill had been supported by the Wyoming Taxpayers Association and the Wyoming Economic Development Association, as well as the Wyoming Travel Industry Coalition.
