- The question of replacing the embattled mascot at Teton Valley High School will not become a ballot issue for the public to weigh in on. Teton County School District 401 explained that under Idaho state law, neither the school board nor the public can ask to have the question put on November’s ballot, according to Elections Compliance Specialist Dorothy Canary, of the Secretary of State’s office in Boise. Canary specified that the election process is for electing school board trustees and bonds and levies, so the question about the school mascot would note be able to be put on the ballot. “Any kind of ‘mock election,’” Canary said, “could not take place at county election sites. The staff from the Teton County Idaho office of the county clerk had reached out to the Secretary of State’s office after discussion arose about that possibility following Monday’s school board meeting. Meanwhile, The Board of Trustees has scheduled a working session regarding the mascot on Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Driggs Elementary School. The goals they said they hope to accomplish at this meeting are to listen and encourage dialogue with one another, in a less formal setting than the regular board meeting, and to allow and encourage the public to bring forth ideas to move forward in a positive direction regarding the mascot/symbol.
