The debate isn’t over yet, but it is looking increasingly like May Park in Jackson will eventually be the preferred site for a new permanent dog park. Each winter, a seasonal dog park is set up in the parking lot of the fairgrounds and removed again in the spring. Parks Manager Andrew Erskine says a permanent park has been made a high priority in the agency’s strategic plan, and Parks and Rec has been working with PAWS of Jackson to identify a likely setting for such a facility. Erskine says PAWS is in the process of getting designers together to put together an idea of how it should be designed. Erskine says, “It will obviously fall under the Parks and Rec capital – piece our capital component. They have offered to pay and help maintain it.” He says it’s really just a collaborative effort right now. Erskine says a conditional use permit will have to be drawn up after a design plan has been created and presented by PAWS. After that, it may be three months or more before plans will be publicized and open houses conducted to solicit public input. Erskine says the northeast corner of May Park at the intersection of East Hansen Avenue and Rancher Street is the area currently being eyed as the possible location of the dog park.
