The National Park Service has set the fire danger level in Yellowstone National Park to moderate. Currently, there is one active wildland fire in the park. The Milepost 17 Fire, caused by lightning, is controlled with little to no heat remaining.
At this time, there are no fire restrictions in place or planned for the park. Campfires are allowed only within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. It is crucial to always attend campfires and ensure they are cold to the touch before leaving them. The recommended method is to soak, stir, feel, and repeat until the fire is completely out.
The Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem where fire plays a vital role in maintaining the health of wildlife habitats and vegetation. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed about current fire activity in Yellowstone.
