After fifty years, two historic paintings are back home at the Interior Department this week. “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” and “The Chasm of the Colorado” by Thomas Moran, are credited with firing up Americans’ love affair with the West in the 1870’s. The paintings have been on loan for half a century, most recently at the Smithsonian Institute, but are now back on display in the Interior Museum in Washington DC. The seven-foot by twelve-foot landscape paintings anchor a new exhibition at the Interior Museum titled, Thomas Moran & the ‘Big Picture.’ In capturing the natural beauty of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, these historic canvases framed the discourse on public lands and influenced the creation of America’s national parks.
