The Idaho Statesman is reporting that Boise High School is also wrestling with the issue of a Native American mascot. Teton High School in Driggs recently was told by its school board to shed the mascot name “Redskins” as being racially insensitive. According to the Idaho Stateman, the Boise High School leadership also wants to change their nickname to one more respectful of Native Americans; possibly as early as this fall. They propose changing from “Braves” to “The Brave” which would preserve many of the traditions and values Boise High wishes to instill in its students. The Boise school’s mascot has been in place since the 1920s, just as the Teton Valley High School mascot has been in place for about 90 years. As yet, a timeline for making the Teton High School’s nickname change has not been set. In June, the Shoshone-Bannock tribes submitted a position paper to the Idaho State Board of Education calling for the state government to ban the use of all Native American mascots in the state’s high schools.
