A magnitude 5.7 earthquake north of Magna, Utah (just west of Salt Lake City) occurred shortly after 7:00 this morning, knocking pictures from walls, causing some minor damage to structures and delaying flights out of the Salt Lake City Airport. Aftershocks included one measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale. Today’s earthquake was the largest earthquake to occur in Utah since a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in 1992 in southwestern Utah near St. George. The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor knocked power out for a time to thousands of customers. People in Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada reported feeling the quake, and some light shaking was registered on instruments in Grand Teton National Park.
