Yellowstone National Park reminds us that today is the 105th anniversary of the “Organic Act,” which created the National Park Service.
Over those years, millions of people have experienced the national parks and have created memories that have endured with their families.
That tradition continues today. Photographs, post cards, musical compositions and letters exchanged between friends and families have captured the impacts that these reserves nationwide have had on American citizens and foreign visitors alike.
In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt is quoted of having argued, “The establishment of the National Park Service is justified by considerations of good administration, of the value of natural beauty as a national asset, and of the effectiveness of outdoor life and recreation in the production of good citizenship.”
When the National Park Service was created in 1916, there were 35 sites to be managed by the new organization. Today there are 423.
