A new wildfire has been discovered in the Bridger-Teton National Forest’s Jackson Ranger District. According to Spokesman Kasey Stewart, an early August lightning storm ignited the Flat Creek Fire, which is burning south of Sheep Mountain and east of the Flat Creek Ranch in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. This fire was first reported by a member of the public, and then located by firefighters on August 12th. This small fire currently measures .10 acre in size, and is smoldering and creeping in an isolated pocket of subalpine fir and spruce trees. The Flat Creek Fire is located in steep terrain with open grass and forb meadows, isolated pockets of subalpine fir and spruce, scree, and rocky cliffs. A local type 4 team is assigned to the Flat Creek Fire. Being in the wilderness, the fire will be managed for its resource benefits. At the same time, fire managers will develop a strategy which include the protection of life and property, enhancement of the Gros Ventre Wilderness’ natural values, and the safe and effective utilization of firefighting resources. Smoke from this fire may occasionally be visible from anywhere in Jackson Hole valley.
