Wyoming search and rescue personnel conduct an average of more than 300 missions annually across the state for those who become lost or stranded. The most common missions involve searches for people who were hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing/snowboarding, or they were motor vehicle related. Although several of the people rescued were from out of state, a higher number of them were Wyoming residents.
The State of Wyoming has set up a new radio channel for emergency use in the backcountry called “Be 307 Aware.” On your handheld radio, program 307 into your device. Then, during an emergency, Search & Rescue personnel will be able to reach you on that channel. It is not a 911 type service, but by using the 307 channel, you can help Search and Rescue efforts to locate you.
The channel is not actively monitored by Search and Rescue unless a search is in progress. More information about the new service is available at hls.wyo.gov/307.
