With hints of springtime in the air, the Town of Jackson is beginning to ramp up preparations for events that traditionally mark the season; including Elkfest on the town square May 21st, and Old West Days weekend May 27th through the 29th.
But this year a major tradition will be noticeably missing. Over the years, the largest parade of the year kicked off the celebration of the community’s Old West heritage replete with scores of horses and horse-drawn wagons, participants dressed up in mountain man or old west settlers’ costumes, and of course more contemporary entries. In the past, the parade drew over 80 entries and thousands of spectators from around throughout region.
However, this year the Old West organizers have decided to eliminate the parade from the activities. Chamber Operations Manager Riley Francis Harris explained to Jackson Hole Radio that in recent years, organizers have had a difficult time getting people to be involved in the event. Quoting Harris,
“The decision to eliminate the parade was made by the Old West Days committee after evaluating the continuous lack of volunteers needed every year to put on the parade.” A schedule of the remaining events for the weekend will be published in the weeks to come.
