The annual closure of the bicycle pathway along the west side of the National Elk Refuge is in effect. The closure was written into the plan when the pathway was built in deference to the elk that migrate onto the refuge. The annual seasonal closure is in place from November 1 through April 30. Recreational uses may be allowed on the refuge land if they do not interfere with the purposes for which the refuge was established. However, the law governing the refuge specifically states it’s “wildlife first” when it comes to considering recreational opportunities on Service lands. Generally, recreational uses on refuges include hunting, fishing, photography, wildlife viewing, interpretation, and environmental education because they minimize disturbances to wildlife and promote the Service’s mission.
