A panel of five native Americans participated in a forum in Teton Valley Wednesday night regarding the appropriateness of Teton High School’s mascot.
The general consensus of the panelists is that the term “Redskins” is offensive to indigenous peoples. Panelist Amanda Blackhorsereferenced the definition found in the dictionary which calls “Redskins” a racial slur. Co-panelist Randy L’Teton explains that years of oppression of Native Americans are caught up in the issue of the name.
The forum was organized by some residents in the area in advance of a school board meeting July 8thwhen the topic of possibly replacing the mascot is to be discussed. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Teton High School in Driggs. Public comment will be taken on the issue at that time.
