If the public sees smoke in the Grouse Mountain area south of US Highway 26/287, they need not be alarmed. The Blackrock Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest plans to begin ignitions on the Grouse Mountain Prescribed Fire as soon as today in that location.
The unit is comprised of up to 365-acres approximately 7-miles south of US Highway 26/287. The Grouse Mountain prescribed fire unit is designed to restore whitebark pine habitat and study the effects of other treatments on the species.
Whitebark pine nuts, which are a high-energy food rich in fats, carbohydrates, and protein, are an important part of the diet of the area’s grizzly bear population, especially as they prepare for hibernation.
