As of last Friday, no retailer or retail store within the Town of Jackson can provide single-use disposable plastic bags less than 4 mil thick to a customer at the point of sale. The restriction was passed last January by the town council with grocers and large retailers not be able to distribute single-use bags beginning April 15th, and now followed by the town’s other, smaller stores. Shoppers are encouraged to bring and use their own reusable bags to avoid having to buy bags. Retailers and retail stores will collect a twenty-cent waste reduction fee for each disposable, paper bag or reusable plastic bag that is 4 mils or greater that are provided to a customer at the point of sale. The fee collected will be split between the businesses and the town.
