An early morning fire Thursday heavily damaged an east Jackson home and could have cost the occupant his life had it not been for an alert police officer. According to Battalion Chief Mike Moyer, emergency services were notified of a residential structure fire on East Deloney at about 3:30 am. A neighbor reported flames on the east end of the home and reported having not seen anyone exit the home.
Upon the arrival of Jackson Police, Sergeant Garrett Kellams immediately made an effort to determine if the home was occupied by pounding on the door. Receiving no immediate response, he entered the home and woke the lone occupant, immediately evacuating him through the smoke and out of the burning structure. Since the home’s smoke detectors were not sounding, Sergeant Kellams’ actions ensured that the occupant was awakened with enough time to escape before becoming overcome by smoke and fire. A second occupant who resides in a basement apartment was not home at the time of the fire. The fire was consuming the exterior east walls and roof of the home when firefighters arrived.
The first unit on the scene was able to substantially suppress the fire until additional fire units from other stations joined in the effort and extinguished the blaze, limiting further property loss. Altogether, about 25% of the structure sustained heavy fire damage with smoke damage throughout the main floor. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
