Poor visibility is being blamed for causing a 26-year-old Jackson snowboarder to become disoriented Thursday and having to spend the night in the backcountry west of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Pierre Bergman had left the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort through Backcountry Gate 2 that afternoon, intending to ride the Rock Springs drainage. However, due to the limited visibility he was separated from his group and mistakenly ended up in the upper reaches of Granite Canyon. Bergman was reported missing by his partners around 10:15 pm, and a group of Teton County Search and Rescue personnel and Grand Teton National Park rangers mounted a search Friday morning. Searchers aboard the Teton County Search and Rescue helicopter located Bergman in an area the helicopter could not land. A ground-based team united with Bergman and skied with him to an area where the helicopter could set down and all were flown back to the Ranch Parking Lot at Teton Village. Bergman was cold, but not injured in the event. Authorities remind those who consider exiting the ski resort that the ridgeline near Backcountry Gate 2 can be deceiving during low visibility and backcountry skiers sometimes can end up in areas they did not intend to visit.
