Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling Department is once again providing way for residents to get the drop on jack-o-lantern disposal. Instead of throwing the pumpkin in the trash, it can be turned into compost at the Great Pumpkin Smash Saturday at the Teton County Rodeo Grounds near the blue recycling bins. Fire Engine ladder drops starting at 10:00 am and continue on the half hour until noon. On average, 66,000 pounds of pumpkins are thrown out each year in Jackson Hole. This event is sponsored in cooperation with Terra Firma Organics. Then, the pumpkins dropped off at the Pumpkin Smash will be hauled in a huge load to the transfer station, where the pumpkins will be processed into compost. The estimated compost time for the pumpkins is one year.
