An Idaho state representative has pledged to be on hand for a rally next week supporting the mascot for Teton High School. On his Facebook page over the weekend, Republican Representative Chad Christiansen says he is fed up with political correctness and oversensitivity. Christiansen says the term “Redskin” did not originate as a negative term. In fact, he says, Native Americans used the term themselves. It is a very literal term. As such, he says he stands with those who support keeping the mascot at the high school in honor of the Native Americans. Christiansen says he plans to attend the valley’s “Show Your Pride Day” the evening of June 4thin the high school gymnasium. The issue was most recently raised by a parent at a school board meeting in March and it was determined the issue needed to be addressed in a much larger venue July 8thto allow a cross section of the community to be heard. The issue has been the subject of heated debate by residents firmly taking both sides of the argument since 2013.
