Real estate transfer tax bill fails

A bill to give Wyoming counties the ability to institute real estate transfer taxes failed an introduction vote 19-40 on Wednesday morning in the state House of Representatives. Democrats in the chamber, including two from Teton County who have pushed for the measure, were outnumbered 7 to 51. Representative Jim Roscoe says he thinks the loss was due to the bill not being understood.

“We have already lost the real estate transfer tax which was sad because we never got to explain that it was a local control – even if you didn’t like the tax, it would give you the opportunity to vote against it.
The bill would have allowed counties to consider a 1% tax for any value in a sale above $1.5 million if voters approved the measure.
