WYDOT Schedules Teton Pass Closure for June 28 Weekend to Complete Big Fill Slide Repairs
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), in collaboration with Ames Construction, has scheduled a weekend closure of Wyoming State Highway 22 (WYO 22) over Teton Pass from June 27 to June 30, 2025, to finalize repairs on the Big Fill Slide. The closure, announced on June 22, 2025, will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 27, and continue through Sunday, June 29, with the road reopening at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30. The work addresses a catastrophic landslide that damaged the highway in June 2024, impacting commuters and commerce between Jackson, Wyoming, and eastern Idaho.
During the closure, crews will work 24 hours a day to mill, grade, place crushed base, pave, and install guardrails and signs along the final stretch of the reconstructed roadway. The closure affects vehicle access at Coal Creek Campground on the west side and the mile marker 7 gate on the east side. Drivers must detour via US 26 through Swan Valley and Snake River Canyon, adding approximately 60 miles and over an hour to the usual 24-mile, 32-minute trip from Victor, Idaho, to Jackson.
WYDOT Resident Engineer Bob Hammond explained that recent rain delayed the original June 21 closure, prompting the rescheduling to ensure crew readiness and minimize weekday commuter disruptions. Bicyclists and recreationalists can access Coal Creek Campground and the top of Teton Pass from the east side but are urged to avoid descending west toward the construction zone and to stay cautious of heavy truck traffic.
WYDOT and Ames Construction are confident the $43 million project can be completed within the weekend, but weather or other variables may alter plans.
