Jackson Hole Fire EMS responded to the scene of a roof slide-off Sunday which damaged a vent-pipe allowing carbon monoxide to back-up into the home. Teton County Fire Marshal Kathy Clay says the call was likely the first of several that will occur before the winter season is over.
Clay said, “You know, your roof is prone to slides during these warm spells and cold spells back and forth, in the accumulation of snow – and you should be very mindful of that roof sliding with that snow load can sheer pipes off. It is probably going to happen, and you aren’t even going to know about it. If you have a fuel-fired appliance, it’s critical to have a carbon monoxide alarm in your home, so it can give you early warning if something is going wrong in the system.”
Clay also points out that snow sliding off of roofs can damage the regulators and gas service lines into the house. With that in mind, those locations should be monitored closely.
