Local residents have taken the town council to task over a couple of recent housing votes.
Correspondence to council members complained that a high-density housing project on Kelly Avenue is not in keeping with the neighborhood while the decision not to support a housing development at Hog Island was missing an opportunity.
In describing the proposal at 440 West Kelly, one resident said, “The intent to create more housing is good, but as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Unless the plan is to curb the need for more housing in Jackson by rapidly making it less desirable to live here… In which case, I think the plan and the implementation is genius”
Meanwhile, the council’s decision to vote against a comprehensive plan amendment that would have allowed about 150 deed restricted homes was derided as a bewilderment.
“Your no votes have left me and most of our community scratching our collective heads. As Hank Phibbs was quoted, these opportunities won’t come around again. It will be a shame to look back at this moment in time and regret that you let this project slip through your fingers”, one voter said.
Another voter emailed, “ I voted for all four of you but I will not again. I didn’t even follow this closely because I assumed it was a no brainer.”
Still another wrote, “I’m writing to express my complete and utter disappointment in your vote and that of your peers on the council and county board. My frustration is echoed across the valley this week and I sincerely hope you will revisit this opportunity with more creative, flexible thinking to include all options for filling our housing void.”
