Since 1891, the sound of that tinkling bell outside stores throughout communities has somehow become synonymous with the Christmas holiday. Beginning today, shoppers in the town of Jackson will hear that sound and see volunteers manning the familiar red Salvation Army kettles outside Albertsons, Smith’s, TJ Maxx, Ace Hardware and at the Town Square. Money collected in the local Salvation Army Kettles remains in the community to address the needs of the community’s less fortunate families throughout the year.
The money could go to buy prescription medicine for someone who needs it, emergency dental care for someone in pain or an electrical bill in danger of being shut off. That spare change, the dollar bills and the larger notes go into a fund administrated by a local board of the Salvation Army.
The board then distributes the money, mostly through Community Resource Center, the Good Samaritan Mission and the hospital. In addition to donating money to the annual drive, people are invited to sign up for a couple hours here and there between now and December 24th.
