Teton County Search and Rescue was called out Wednesday afternoon, when they received a call from someone in the Coal Creek area that they’d witnessed a large avalanche off the East Face of Mount Taylor. Due to the popular nature of the area as well as ski tracks leading into the slide, the rescue team sent a helicopter team to the slide path to do a beacon search. The helicopter team observed four tracks into the slide, and four tracks out. The helicopter proceeded to scan the slope and debris field from the air without getting a hit from a beacon, and so they returned to the Search and Rescue hangar. In an official release from the team, they stated how relieved they are that nobody was caught in this very large, potentially fatal avalanche. Teton County Search and Rescue urges back country users to exercise caution, and remember that the decisions you make have the potential to put numerous other people in harm’s way, especially in a busy area like Teton Pass.
