Saturday Is ‘Moose Day’

It is that time of year again when local volunteers join forces with wildlife biologists from the national forest, national park and game and fish department to count the moose living in and around Jackson Hole. The Jackson Hole Wildlife Federation is coordinating so-called “Moose Day” Saturday which typically involves 50-60 local volunteers, plus involvement from several local ranches. Teams of two or three people get an assigned territory in areas that are difficult for Wyoming Game and Fish biologists to survey (mostly near private lands or adjacent to more developed areas) and record moose observations. These collected data contribute to monitoring moose population trends in Jackson Hole over time. Recording observations of moose throughout the valley and adjacent to developed neighborhoods helps understand how to live compatibly with a treasured species of wildlife. Last year a total of 77 moose were recorded on Moose Day which was the lowest total since 2013, when volunteers spotted 67 moose. That was after coming off a record year in 2017, when 172 moose were observed. The average count is 87 moose. Those wishing to participate may contact the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation at 739-0968.
