The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office has posted a unique scam alert for that county. The sheriff’s office received a call Sunday afternoon from a citizen who had received a phone call from a Douglas, Wyoming number impersonating Sublette County’s Public Information Officer, Sergeant Travis Bingham.
The caller told the citizen he was issued a subpoena to be an expert witness and was in contempt of court through the local district court Judge for failing to appear. The Sheriff’s office says such scams are becoming more common, where the conmen research a law enforcement agency online and attempt to scare residents into scams.
This one didn’t ask for money payments, but a return call to the number finds they have also added a recorded voicemail posing as Sergeant Bingham. The sheriff’s office points out that their office would never call citizens about contempt of court dates.
They urge the public to be aware of these ploys, and if in doubt, always call local law enforcement at their known number to ensure legitimacy of the caller especially where they claim to be an officer.
