The Teton High School moniker “Redskins” will be no more. By a vote of 4 to 1 Tuesday night, the Teton County School District 401 Board of Trustees decided to retire the name after years of contention.
During its regularly-scheduled meeting on Monday, July 8th, the board listened to four hours of public comment and then discussed the issue for nearly another two hours before coming to a consensus to schedule a work-session this past Tuesday regarding the mascot decision where there was another four hours of discussion.
No deadline for the action was set. In their decision, the board determined to retire the name as the first step, and to form a committee to determine how to move forward in the process. The board also stipulated that taxpayer money was not to be used in implementing the change and that the transition away from the Redskin mascot be made in a slow, responsible and respectful manner with continued community involvement.
