For the third time this season, the Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team finished right on the heels of Cheyenne East—this time at the University of Wyoming tournament last weekend. It was Jackson’s fifth tournament of the season held virtually on December 11-12. The competition attracted 30 schools with over 300 entries. The Jackson team, coached by Londe and Peggy Gagnon, was able to bring home the 2nd place trophy with just 13 members competing. They edged out 3rd place finisher Rock Springs. Cheyenne East finished in 1st in 4A. It was William Aepli’s turn to shine for the Broncs. The junior enjoyed a productive weekend with a 1st place finish in Congressional Debate. Aepli went on to partner with fellow junior Lily Briggs to place 1st in Public Forum Debate as well. Aepli was also named top speaker in Public Forum Debate.As for Briggs, she continued her success with a 5th place finish in Congressional Debate. Senior and team captain Josh Hansen again helped pace his team over the weekend. He placed 2nd in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Hansen was also named the 2nd Best Speaker in the same event. He rounded out the weekend with a 2nd place finish in Congressional Debate. And watch out for those underclassmen. Sophie Lamb continued her hot streak as the sophomore took top honors in novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was named the Best Speaker in the event as well. Lamb went on to place 3rd in novice Extemporaneous Speaking. Freshman Jackson Neishabouri finished in 4th place in the same event. Sophomore Jheili Montiel Huerta partnered with fellow sophomore Alexis Hernandez to bring home 6th in Public Forum Debate. Montiel Huerta was named the 4th Best Speaker in Public Forum Debate. Hernandez went on to reach semifinals in varsity Extemporaneous Speaking. Freshman Brittney Tzompa impressed with a 2nd place finish in novice Original Oratory. Sophomore Julieta Anaya placed 4th in varsity Humorous Interpretation. Anaya partnered with fellow sophomore Blanca Sartillo to place 4th in varsity Duo Interpretation also. Sartillo went on to place 5th in Program Oral Interpretation. The Jackson ‘speechies’ are back at it this coming weekend at the Holiday Classic hosted by Cheyenne East—a mammoth tournament with over 600 entries with 57 schools attending. It would be a great time to finally put Cheyenne East in the rearview mirror for once this season.
