Scouts Still Have Antlers to Sell

With the final tally of sales after last week’s annual Scout BSA antler auction in Jackson, the total sales were averaged and showed bidders paid $18.19 per pound which was up from the $16.77 that was paid on average in 2019. While there were 9,672 pounds of antlers available to bidders, some pallets of antlers did not sell, bringing the total amount of antlers sold to 8,117 pounds. There was a total of 101 registered bidders, with 45 actively participating in the ten-day virtual auction, which yielded a total of $151,468, which was down from last year’s take of $186,227. Scouts are currently determining how to market the remaining antlers – consisting primarily of matched pairs – in the months ahead. For their extraordinary effort, the Jackson District Scouts retain 25% of the sale’s proceeds, which is used to supplement fees for day camps, leader and Scout training, and other activities. The remaining 75% of the take is returned to the National Elk Refuge, which manages approximately 25,000 acres as winter range for the Jackson Elk Herd. The funds are used for habitat enhancement projects, including paying for farming equipment, weed management, and seasonal employees that operate the Refuge’s irrigation program.
