Search and Rescue finds lost skiers

March 16, 2022 by Jackson Hole Radio

Teton County Search and Rescue is reporting a successful mission Sunday afternoon when they were called to locate two Idaho skiers who had become disoriented while skiing south of Teton Pass. Just before 6:00 pm Sunday, Search and Rescue was alerted to the pair of missing skiers. The father and son had left at 8:00 am and were supposed to return by 2:00 pm.
When they missed their exit time, they called home, to Driggs, Idaho, to say they had gotten lost. The wife then alerted authorities who dispatched Teton County Search and Rescue. The missing skiers’ vehicle was located at the top of the Pass, and searchers responded with a team in the RZR, two ski teams, and the helicopter, with flight-time aided by extra sunshine due to daylight saving time.

The teams headed into the Mosquito Creek area, known as the “Black Hole” due to its tendency to confuse and disorient backcountry users over the years. The skiers were spotted from the helicopter uninjured, at 6:55 pm. The ship landed, volunteers loaded the two skiers inside, and they flew to the Search and Rescue hangar where they were reunited with family.
Then on Monday evening, Search and Rescue was called to evacuate a skier at the Baldy Knoll Yurt, on the west slope of the Tetons who had suffered an injured knee. Team members responded Tuesday morning and brought him out on snowmobiles.
