With sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, an increasing concern across the state, the Wyoming Department of Health is encouraging better prevention efforts and testing for Wyoming residents.
Wyoming has experienced a 23.6 percent increase in chlamydia cases, a 33.5 percent increase in gonorrhea cases and a 35.5 percent increase in syphilis cases.
To date in the State, there have been nearly 1000 cases of chlamydia, 175 cases of gonorrhea and 35 cases of syphilis reported.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Alexia Harrist, noted overall STI testing was down compared to previous years, meaning there are potentially undiagnosed and untreated STIs in Wyoming.
The Department of Health said STI prevention strategies can include:
Abstinence, getting tested before starting a new sexual relationship, condom use, limiting the number of partners, and routine testing.
Leslie Fowler, Communicable Disease Prevention Program manager with WDH says, the only way to know your STI status, for sure, is to get tested.
