The National Park Service has welcomed ShihMing Huang as the new smoke management specialist within its Branch of Wildland Fire, effective immediately. Huang, formerly an air quality scientist with extensive experience in environmental consulting, will leverage his expertise to support NPS and other Department of the Interior agencies, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Land Management.
Huang holds a bachelor’s degree in biological science from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in environmental science from California State University, Chico. His new role will focus on providing senior-level advice and conducting advanced technical analyses to manage wildland fire smoke across various federal agencies.
His previous work has significantly advanced understanding of smoke emissions from wildfires and prescribed burns, impacting air quality and public health. Huang has collaborated with numerous governmental and academic partners, securing funding from organizations such as the USFS, EPA, and NASA to tackle key environmental challenges.
Huang’s appointment is part of a broader initiative to enhance interagency efforts in managing wildland fire-related issues, particularly smoke and its broader environmental impacts.
