Jackson, Wyoming braces for continued smoke from the Fish Creek and Pack Trail fires. The Fish Creek fire, which started on August 16, 2024, is currently 25,069 acres and located 22 miles southeast of Moran. It is burning in dense, heavy timber and has remained within containment lines despite recent strong winds. The smoke columns from this fire have been notably visible due to the wind conditions.
The firefighting teams have faced challenges with the weather, as cooler temperatures, wetting precipitation, or increased humidity, which would aid in containment, have not been forthcoming. According to Jackson District Ranger Todd Stiles, even the recent rain and snow have not significantly halted the fire’s progress due to its location in heavy timber and the presence of substantial downed and dead fuels.
Safety concerns, particularly related to the numerous dead and fire-weakened trees known as “snags,” remain a priority. These snags pose significant risks during strong wind periods and have necessitated continued road and area closures for both public and firefighter safety.
Additionally, the Pack Trail fire, spotted on September 15, 2024, lies just three miles south of the Fish Creek Fire. It is burning in heavy timber and brush north of the south fork of Purdy Creek and exhibits active fire behavior with tree torching noted along 100% of the fire perimeter. The terrain surrounding this fire reportedly reduces the chances of rapid spread, but contingency plans are in place should it threaten critical areas.
Efforts to manage these fires include the use of four skid steers, two excavators, two helicopters, four fire engines, and 210 personnel. Crews are engaged in suppression repair activities, focusing on the fireline construction and managing the fire’s edge, particularly in the Cottonwood drainage.
