Snow King Partners with Local Youth Organizations to Bring ‘Treetop Adventure’ to Kids of All Abilities

June 26, 2018 by Jackson Hole Radio

Snow King Mountain partnered with three local youth organizations last week to enable kids of all abilities to experience the mountains and outdoors at ‘Treeptop Adventure.’
“Snow King has always strived to bring the beauty and adventure of our mountain to people and kids of all background and abilities,” said Snow King General Manager Ryan Stanley. “We’re honored to host youth from the Van Vleck House, Teton Behavior Therapy and Teton County School Districts Bronc Prep Program at Treetop Adventure this week. We’re constantly striving to make the park more accessible and adaptive for the community and will continue our efforts to ensure Snow King is for everyone.”

On Friday, June 22 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. children from the Van Vleck House, Teton Behavior Therapy, and Teton County School Districts Bronc Prep Program were on the course. Built by world-class mountain guides, the Treetop Adventure harnesses the “power of play” by maximizing fun and minimizing risk so people of all abilities can experience the thrill of pushing their physical and mental boundaries as they climb, zip, and fly through the trees in a secure, natural environment.
The Van Vleck House is a Group Home and Crisis Shelter that provides prevention, early intervention and treatment programs for Teton County youth. Director Arty Polo will bring up 4 high school aged kids, currently residing at the Van Vleck House, who will do a “service project” helping move landscaping materials before heading out on the course. This is the second year youth from Van Vleck are utilizing the course.
Teton Behavior Therapy employs a dozen therapists, academic coaches, and social workers who help kids and families cope with stress and a variety of emotional and behavioral issues. This summer they launched an “Executive Functioning Summer Camp.” Executive Functioning is the set of mental skills that help us plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and figure out how to complete multiple tasks. Some children struggle more than others with these skills, especially those with ADHD, Dyslexia, or other unique learning styles. In a fun, activity-based atmosphere each camper embarks on a journey of discovering what it takes to create goals, solve problems, develop and utilize organizational skills, and tackle problematic procrastination. The Flying Squirrel (kids course) will be the grand finale of their first week of camp.

Clint Traver, Dean of Student Services at Jackson Hole High School, will be bringing a handful of incoming freshman identified as “at risk” for a day of fun, friendship, and confidence building to help with their transition into high school. The “Bronc Prep” program is just one of the creative solutions our local schools have developed to meet their vision “to be a premier district where every student is prepared to succeed.”
