A snowmobiler died over the weekend just outside West Yellowstone when an avalanche swept him downhill and into trees in the Lionhead area.
The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center says 30-year-old Bradie Becker from Iowa was partially buried shortly before 5:00 pm on Sunday.
A news release from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s office says Bradie had been separated from the group of snowmobilers at the time of the avalanche. He was wearing an avalanche airbag that had been deployed and a helmet, but he was buried and suffocated.
A volunteer snowmobile rescue team attempted lifesaving efforts for more than an hour before the snowmobiler was pronounced dead. This marks the third avalanche death in Montana this season.
