Soccer split in Rock Springs

Top-ranked Rock Springs showed just why the latest coaches’ poll has them #3 in the 4A. The Lady Tigers remain unbeaten at home (6-0) and without a loss in conference save the 2-1 overtime final they dropped at the hands of Jackson on March 27. In fact, Jackson’s 2 goals that game mark the most the Lady Tigers have surrendered in a match all season. The stingy Rock Springs defense has allowed just 4 goals all year while pitching six shutouts now in 2021.
Rock Springs got on the board early Thursday. Just 4 minutes into the contest Brecken Hunsaker got away from defenders Brooklyn Hills and Natalie Joralemon before dishing a blind pass off to Karli Nelson that Morgan Ducket somehow failed to move out of harm’s way. That allowed the junior striker to just walk into one and blast home a gimme 10-yarder that Broncs’ keeper Sydney Nash had no chance on.
A bang-bang converted corner kick made it 2-0 with 22 minutes left in the half. That is where the score stayed into the halftime intermission.
“They had two goals off corners,” Hills said after the game. “They are really good about crossing the ball. Twice they scored off beautiful passes across the width of the field.”
Rock Springs struck again early in the second half. Ten minutes in, a long-distance free kick from 38 yards out was stopped by nicely Nash but the ensuing corner made for the Tigers’ 3rd goal of the game and had the Lady Broncs on their heels. Another tally with minutes left in the match made it a 4-0 final for Rock Springs.
Jackson never could mount much in the way of a comeback. The Lady Tigers were just too strong in this one.
“It was nothing we did necessarily bad. Some of our losses this year have been when we weren’t able to play our game,” Hills shared. “But give them credit, we’ve had some trouble coming off the bus [ready to play] this season, and they came out hard on their senior night and had us reeling all game.”
Jackson is now 6-3 on the season. Rock Springs improves to 6-2 and 1st in the 4A West. The Lady Broncs lick their wounds and head home to face the Green River Lady Wolves (2-6, 0-6), a team Jackson defeated 11-1 on March 25.
Boys survive another scare
Despite overwhelming Rock Springs with superior speed, it took Jackson until 2:30 left in the first half to get on the board with a goal by Daniel Hurta, his 6th of the year.
The Tigers, however, got the equalizer in the 61st minute of the match.
Staring at a possible overtime session, it was Jackson’s Teddy Opler playing the hero…again. He notched his team-leading 13th goal of the season with 6 minutes to play in regulation for the 2-1 win.
Jackson is now 9-0, 7-0 on the season with Green River coming to town this Saturday. The Broncs defeated the Wolves 2-0 back on March 25.
