The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team maintained their winning season, earning 2nd place in 3A at the Mustang Classic, held at Natrona County High School in Casper Friday and Saturday. This meet attracted 28 schools with close to 800 total entries. While Riverton captured the 1st place finish with 34 points, Jackson was close behind with 28 points and edged out Worland and Douglas who finished in 3rd place with 21 points and 4th place with 20 points respectively. This meet is a precursor to the State meet next month, finding nearly all Wyoming programs competing in Casper along with several South Dakota schools. Juniors Josh Hansen and Preston Harman joined forces in Public Forum Debate, an event with 47 total entries, and placed first. The team explored the issue of whether or not the United States should replace means-tested welfare programs with a universal basic income. Hansen also made it to the final round of Congressional Debate. He was joined by sophomores Will Aepli and Carter Worcester. Aepli and Levy made it to the octo-final round of Lincoln Douglas Debate after going undefeated in preliminary rounds. Despite the scarcity of first place finishes, Coach Londe Gagnon points out, “The scores many of our team earned would have advanced them to culminating rounds at any other tournament of the season.” The team next travels to Powell this coming weekend.
