High winds in Driggs, Idaho Monday night blew over the screen at the Spud Drive In theater. The Iconic drive in has been entertaining the public from the site since 1953 and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. On Site Manager Jedd Mumm says he had been checking something outside his house on the back of the property between 8:30 and 10:00 pm and looked toward the screen to find it no longer standing.
“The plan is to move forward. We’ve called the owner – he wants to rebuild the screen to keep the nostalgia of it. So, we’ve got to work through the process of finding a contractor and an engineer; and the plan is to get it open before summer. So hopefully by June first, we’ll see – that’s a goal, we’ll just keep pushing for that.”
In fact, Mumm says, there has been a plan in place for a couple years now to upgrade with a new screen and put a new roof on the Spud Shack. Mumm he already has had numerous calls of people wanting to help rebuild.
“So many people have contacted us and tell us that they can help us do a fundraiser, or they want to help us support it with their thrift store. It’s just amazing the amount of outreach that’s come in the valley to us already.”
