A game with playoff implications needed no further hype as the Broncs and Braves battled for the 81st edition of the “Fall Brawl” in an intense rivalry that dates back to 1931. Star Valley proved too much for the visiting Jackson team as the Braves rolled to their 16th consecutive victory and 3rd straight shutout with a 30-0 win Friday in Afton.
After a tentative battle of defenses and field position game, it was Star Valley that took a slim 7-0 lead into halftime. Both teams kept it conservative on offense and both defenses showed why they both been racking up shutouts this season.
Star Valley’s QB Brant Nelson threw when he had to but it was primarily a whole lot of RJ Cazier that wore down the Broncs defense. The punishing back is listed at 6’3” 225-lbs gets a majority of his carries out of the Power I following the block of his fullback David Castillo.
For Jackson, their star halfback never got going. Star Valley limited Jeydon Cox to 36 yards rushing as Jackson was forced to put the ball in the air for much of the second half.
Quarterback Sadler Smith had a decent game, finding wide receiver Peter Goettler several times for big passing plays, but dropped balls and sacks kept the Broncs from putting together consistent drives.
The loss drops Jackson to 2-2 (4-3 overall) in conference play. The Broncs travel to Evanston this Friday to battle the Devils (0-3, 0-6). Game time at 6pm, on the air with live coverage at 5:30 on KZ95 (95.3FM, KZ95.live).
