Wyoming state lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday that would create a process for designating wildlife migration corridors. The state Select Federal Natural Resources Management Committee would sponsor that bill during the 2020 budget session beginning February 10th. While the bill would give the Wyoming Game and Fish Department the authority to identify migration corridors, the department would still not be permitted to designate them. That power would be in the hands of the governor after receiving a recommendation from a group of stakeholders appointed by the commissioners of the affected counties. Another provision of the bill should it be passed as drafted would require Game and Fish to go back to the drawing board “for any active and current migration corridor previously designated by the department”. This would include the Sublette Mule Deer Migration Corridor, Hoback to Red Desert Migration Route and Platte Valley Mule Deer Migration Route. Opponents of the bill fear the measure would remove science from the designation process.
