The Wyoming Joint Revenue Committee has approved a bill that would levy a 5% lodging tax in order to fund Wyoming office of tourism marketing and remove that marketing from the general fund. Under the proposal, 3% of the state-wide tax would fund a tourism promotion effort to the tune of about $19-million. Representative Mike Madden who co-chairs the committee says it is time to remove the office of tourism from the general fund due to the cyclical nature of the boom and bust economy of Wyoming.
Dianne Shober who heads the office of tourism says as of right now, Wyoming ranks 31stin the country when it comes to state tourism marketing and promotion. The remaining 2% of the proposed tax would go to local governments.
