Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin is off to a solid start of the new year with two eruptions so far in January. Last year, the feature which is considered the world’s tallest active geyser, erupted 32 times for an all-time record in recorded history. Last year’s frequency caught scientists in Yellowstone by surprise since it had only erupted sporadically since awakening in 1961 after a 50-year dormancy. The final eruption in 2018 came on Christmas Day shortly before midnight. So far this year, Steamboat has sent its impressive plumes of water skyward on January 4thand again on January 16th. According to the National Park Service, Steamboat’s minor and major eruptions are entirely unpredictable. While the frequency of its eruptions over the past year have been noteworthy, it is not without precedence. The geyser erupted more than 20 times in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1982, but never as many times as during 2018.
