The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office has announced the passing of their beloved retired K9, Wojtek, who served with distinction for nine years. K9 Wojtek, a Belgian Malinois born in Poland in January 2012, was trained as an Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) at IronHeart High-Performance Working Dogs in Kansas before joining Detective Sergeant Travis Lanning in February 2013.
Wojtek’s service was marked by numerous high-profile assignments where he ensured the safety of dignitaries including Wyoming governors, U.S. Congress members, U.S. Cabinet officials, and former U.S. presidents. His expertise was pivotal at major events like the 2016 Western States Governors’ Association annual meeting, the Conference of Chief Justices and State Court Administrators, and the Federal Reserve Summit.
Sadly, Wojtek was recently diagnosed with cancer. Today, colleagues and friends gathered at Pinedale Animal Hospital to pay their respects during his final moments. His service to the community was profound, and his memory will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him and those he protected.
After retiring, Wojtek lived out his days with his handler, Detective Sergeant Lanning, enjoying a peaceful retirement filled with companionship.
The Sheriff’s Office expresses its gratitude for Wojtek’s service and extends condolences to Lanning and his family. K9 Wojtek’s legacy will endure, symbolizing the remarkable bond between K9s and their handlers.
